Precisely as the devout Protestant then-President Jimmy Carter warned in 1980, contemporary American society has by now become deeply spiritually ill as a consequence of the “Reagan Economic Miracle.”
Here I present the thesis that those primarily responsible for the spiritual catastrophy that this once-noble nation has inflicted upon itself (and is attempting to inflict upon the rest of the world) is the group that I call the “Christian-Satanists.” These are self-identified Christians who embrace what I call “the American State Church of Mammonism.” Many of them believe that it is the Lord, rather than the “Reagan Economic Miracle,” that calls them to a “showdown” fight with Russians (whose society is by now considerably more “Christian” than their own).
The hour has come. My “mission” is to these very people, calling upon them to take the hyphen out of “Christian-Satanist” and decide, once and for all, which side are they on, REALLY?
I write with love in my heart, not judgment, seeking to take the “scales from the eyes” of American “Christian-Satanists” – to invite them to accept the coming fall of the “Reagan Economic Miracle” and the Godly suffering that this will bring instead of waging global war in a doomed effort to prevent this. I invite them to repent themselves of the “Reagan Economic Miracle” and to join the great work for American Perestroika – to Make America Good Again, rebuilding American society so as to be founded on the principle “love thy neighbor as thyself.”
(a). The Satanic character of the “Reagan Economic Miracle” and the political-economic order which it engendered.
(This topic is discussed in detail in Post 1, “The spiritual component of economy in the USA”).
American foundational economic principles changed with the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980. Under Reagan’s predecessor, Jimmy Carter, federal budget deficits as a percentage of GDP were cut nearly in half during his four years in office. Reagan, in contrast, tripled the federal debt from 915 billion to 2.6 trillion during his eight years in office (58). This was the beginning of America’s shift into a debt-fueled economy. This shift has been sustained ever since through active “money printing,” artifically low central bank interest rates, and constantly rising federal debt. And there is no end in sight other than its eventual, inevitable collapse either with or without a devastating final “rage” war against the rest of the world.
Pre-1980 American economics emphasized “savings” as the primary source of funds from which mortgage loans were made (i.e., the bedrock of the economy). The term “consumer confidence” was not used at all until 1967. But under Reagan, “consumer confidence,” essentially the reciprocal of “savings,” became the one and only concern. The society entered a “brave new world” of “economic growth” fueled by credit and consumption ultimately backed by federal debt and the military might to “have its way” in the world.
In pre-1980 “Norman Rockwell days-gone-by,” elections in the USA were a “spiritual ritual” of the once-noble “church” of “Constitutional Pluralism.” But in the era of the “Reagan Economic Miracle,” elections became more-or-less meaningless because ALL of the “mainstream” candidates (i.e., candidates with access to “Reagan Economic Miracle” funding) agreed both on maintaining debt-fueled economy as the “way of life” and on using American military power to advance pecuniary interests of the American elite in the world. The political establishment even went so far as to accuse Russian President Putin of committing an “assault on democracy” for promoting discussions about alternatives to “Reagan Economic Miracle” society in Europe. It further accused the Russian Orthodox Church, which re-emerged in a “spiritual revolution” that swept Russia after the fall of the communists, of being an “organ” of Putin’s anti-democratic program. See the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee report “Putin’s Asymmetric Assault on Democracy in Russia and Europe” (S. Prt. 115-21)(2018).
(Re-emergence of the Russian Orthodox Church after the fall of the communists is discussed in post 6 “The trial of Godly suffering.”)
For all its hype about “democracy” and “constitutional pluralism” and “individual rights” and “separation of church and state,” the USA became a theocracy under a de facto state church – Mammonism. Days go by now in this society as a veritable liturgy of Mammon served by the long since discredited “priests” of “Constitutional Pluralism.”
The hyper-charged “Reagan Economic Miracle” consumer economy produced a “forward chain reaction” with constantly expanding “success,” while real “democracy” faded into a distant memory. The character of “capitalism” itself was transformed in the process from a “natural” process of response to “natural” markets to an increasingly “mechanical” process “automatically” maximizing the “return” on “investment” primarily by promoting ever-expanding consumption. This led to a “mechanical” way of life, mass-produced, automated, cookie-cutter franchised, that minimized human interactions within a conceptual framework of “time is money.” “Individualism” became a mere “buzz word,” a marketing principle in what can best be described as a commercialist-consumerist “cult of individualism.” The social context of “every person for themself” that this promoted was the antithesis of a “love thy neighbor as thyself” society where sinners struggling to be Christian live in peace and repentance.
“Expansion” of the economy became the sole aim of society, while providing a peaceful, stable, “quality” life for the people became irrelevant. The economy became something analogous to “cancer” in that it could only survive by expanding.
“Reagan Economic Miracle”“mechanical capitalism” ultimately proved to be Satanic in character. By “Satanism,” I do not mean the overt worship of Satan but rather the furtherance of Satan’s interest by promoting and even worshiping the ego of individual consumers, setting them on the path of self-consumption whereby they became entrapped by their material desires and ruled by their lower nature, by their greed, lust and self-interest. “Mechanical capitalism” deliberately promotes egoism as a vehicle for increased sales even as it systematically “de-humanizes” society. It thrives on consumers living in an endless cycle of desire and consumption defined by the physical senses and attachments to the material world and characterized by a constant need for external validation and avoidance of the introspection that is critical for spiritual awareness.
But by far the most egregiously sinister, Satanic consequence of “mechanical capitalism” is that it actively “commodifies” human persons as “impersonal modules” within a consumer-technical construct. I think that Protestants do not comprehend the profoundly dark significance of this and that their non-comprehension is the primary reason WHY “Christian-Satanism” is “flourishing” in the USA – this is quite literally an assault on the trinitarian “image of God” that is within each consumer.
Orthodox Christians understand that the human person is, like God, a trinity – our trinity comprising body, soul and spirit. The sinner only truly becomes “thyself” when all three parts are unified within themselves and when, having arrived in “thyself,” they are able to “love thy neighbor as thyself” in “trinitarian communion” “in Christ.” The Orthodox liturgy (which means “the work of the people”) is an ancient ritual and method of group prayer whereby sinners struggling to be Christian assemble as the Mystical Body of Christ – this is the “sacrament of the assembly.” In society we are accustomed to separating male and female. But “in” the “Mystical Body of Christ,” there is no such thing as male and female – they are all one. The Apostle Paul states this explicitly in Galatians 3:28. By participating in the liturgy as a worship service, Orthodox experience the union of male and female “in Christ.”
The “commodification” of human persons as “impersonal modules” within “Reagan Economic Miracle” reality effectively “excises” “spirit” from the “structure” of society, from the “social fabric.” The “collective unity” in such a society is not a “spiritual unity” at all but simply the “unity” of “commodified” “impersonal modules” within a “spiritless” economic machine that generates material well being for consumers living within a spiritual wasteland. The economy (the expansion of which is the sole aim of society) thrives by convincing consumers that “I know who I am” without ever arriving in a state where “spirit,” “soul” and “body” comprise a harmonious presence and certainly without any kind of “connection” between the individual and a unified “collective spirit.” Indeed, individual consumers are encouraged to celebrate their ego, instead of fighting to be free from it. This actively works against the attainment of unity (harmonious presence) within oneself, and even more so against trinitarian (“love thy neighbor as thyself”) communion with others. Even in the case of a conscious, well-informed, self-identified Christian consumer, the work to maintain “unity” of body, soul and spirit within themselves becomes a near-Sisyphean uphill struggle – because there is no collective spiritual unity, in order to experience the “peace of Christ,” which is not of this world (John 14.27-31), they must constantly “swim upstream” in society. To truly experience “trinitarian communion” with other people in other cars requires an extraordinary effort.
(“Trinitarian communion” with other people in American personal automobile-based reality is discussed in post 5, “Being the ‘measure of yeast’: The prayer of I am in Christ in the chest.)
For societies which “commodify” human persons as “impersonal modules” within a consumer-technical construct, the “individual rights” that are much-touted by the West become, frankly, meaningless because this “commodification” has effectively “turned on its head” the concept of “freedom” as understood by Christians (“freedom from one’s fallen nature”).
“Christian-Satanists” are generally at peace with “Reagan Economic Miracle” reality. Many seem to believe that the “peace” they experience from “going with the flow” within it IS the “peace of Christ.” These consumers live in delusion – a very dangerous delusion that comes from having effectively made peace with the “spirit that rules this world.” Such consumers are typically self-assured and often self-righteous, listening to “Jesus loves me” music as they ride peacefully through American carland, oblivious to the inherent violence of this reality, “fueled” by vicious petro wars in which literally millions have been killed by their own military, preposterously claiming to be defending their “freedom.” They are confident in their “personal relationship with Christ” even while they openly advance the interests of Satan in their own society and around the world. And ironically, there is nothing contradictory about their behaviour – According to their simplistic spiritual doctrine, “I believe, so I am saved.” So, they can be absolutely confident of their salvation notwithstanding their ongoing service to the ever-expanding grip of Satanism on the world!
(b). What it means to “love thy neighbor as thyself” and why this is important for a Christian.
(“Loving thy neighbor as thyself” is discussed in detail in Post 12 “Letters to my godson on the ‘work of the people’ and the future of Russia – (d). The struggle of the spirit with the flesh.”)
Protestants and Orthodox Christians apparently have a very different interpretation of what it means to “love thy neighbor as thyself” and why this is important. Here I present the Orthodox perspective:
For Orthodox, the process of getting to know who, exactly, is “thyself” is a process of experiencing unity of spirit, soul and body. This process is learned within the context of the “sacrament of the assembly” and is INSEPARABLE from the process of “loving thy neighbor as thyself” whereby the “Mystical Body of Christ” is able to assemble.
Orthodox do not teach that “I believe, so I am saved.” They teach that “I believe, so I know that I must walk very carefully inside myself to remain on the path to salvation.” This path is the struggle to live in peace and repentance, leaving our badness behind, our bodies becoming gradually spiritualized through the effort to BE our prayer as a unified presence of spirit, soul and body. It is simply not possible to BE our prayer in society without “loving thy neighbor as thyself.”
The act of doing “love thy neighbor as thyself” can be seen as the difference between a passive projection of one’s presence (effectively saying “get out of the way”) and an active feeling of “I love you” towards another. The doing calls for saying “it is not me” to everything inside you that does NOT love this person (even to the point that it sometimes actively “hurts”). In a sense, it is “making room” for the presence of other people within a common “volume of perceptual vibrational density.” It is certainly MUCH MORE than simply maintaining a superficial kindness towards other consumers.
As for why this is important, the Lord explained clearly that this is one aspect of THE MOST IMPORTANT COMMANDMENT: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And there is a second like it: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” (Matthew 22:40)
For “Christian-Satanists” who live by the doctrine “I believe, so I am saved,” this is no more important than the Lord’s maxim, which they similarly ignore, that “You cannot serve two masters, you cannot serve God and the power of money.” (Matthew 6:24).
For Orthodox, however, this is a fundamental determinant of the “social fabric.” It is by obeying this commandment that we not only remain on the “path to salvation” but become stronger and stronger in our faith and in our ableness to BE a unified presence “in Christ” in society. Moreover, obedience to this commandment provides the basis for what I call “the measure of yeast effect,” (Matthew 13:33) whereby the Creator’s love received in the effort to BE our prayer is passed on into the society.
(“The measure of yeast effect” is discussed in detail in post 17).
In Russia, Christian civilization developed for 1000 years emphasizing the communal principle in contrast with the emphasis on individual private property which prevailed in the West. Relatedly, and as a consequence of the direct association of the Orthodox Church with the Russian state, the mysterious spiritual phenomenon known as “sobornost” became the fundamental principle of Russian society. This effectively means “spiritual harmony through unity in love.” It is effectively a manifestation of “love the neighbor as thyself” and is literally the antithesis of individualism – emphasizing the need for cooperation between people at the expense of individualism.
(“Sobornost” is discussed in detail in post 2 “The ‘spiritual component’ of economy in the Russian Federation.”)
“Sobornost” is still alive and well in Russia because the communists did not destroy it. The Bolsheviks introduced “separation of Christian church and state.” But at the same time they very successfully exploited “sobornost” to build an alternative atheist merger of “church” and state. Ironically, the communists preserved Christian principles in “economy” by preserving “sobornost” in society. (Russians have a joke – “There was only ever one true communist – Jesus Christ.”)
Even now, in post-communist generations, as a consequence of lingering “sobornost,” the “fundamental tension” between the separate worlds of male and female, which exists in every society, is “relaxed” and “resolved” in Russia within the framework of collective spiritual unity. This “fundamental tension” still exists, as everywhere. Individual male and female egos are not necessarily consciously aware of this, but both males and females draw from “the nourishing source” of the collective, unified “love of the Russian people” – this is analogous to the collective love that we experience in “trinitarian communion” in the “sacrament of the assembly” of the “Mystical Body of Christ.”
(“Relaxation” of the “fundamental tension” between the separate worlds of male and female within collective spiritual unity is discussed in detail in post 9 “Letters to my godson on the ‘work of the people’ and the future of Russia – (a). Preface.”)
While only 7% of Russians actively participate in the “sacrament of the assembly” on a regular basis, 72% identify themselves as “Orthodox Christians” (59). Yet, for so long as “sobornost” continues to exist within the “social fabric,” this 7% is quite enough to sustain “the measure of yeast effect.” In contrast, 23% of Americans regularly participate in Christian religious services (60). Yet, these consumers have, collectively, no “measure of yeast effect” at all, no doubt in part because there exists no collective spiritual unity to provide “traction.” But there also can be no “measure of yeast effect,” in any case, if prayerful consumers do not actively “love thy neighbor as thyself” in “trinitarian communion.”
(c). Throw off the yoke of tyranny!
For 46 years after the end of the second world war, America’s “Radio Free Europe” broadcast “behind the Iron Curtain” into communist-controlled Eastern Europe, “throw off the yoke of tyranny.”
Russians eventually did just that, overthrowing the communists bloodlessly in 1991.
Now Russia is standing tall again as a Christian country. The West made a hubristic, concerted effort to destroy it economically. But Russia has prevailed, preventing the Satanic “Reagan Economic Miracle” from “commodifying” the Russian people both in the heartland and in its holy ancestral borderland.
Russian Christians can now offer the same encouragement to their brothers and sisters in the USA that Radio Free Europe once offered them: Throw off the yoke of tyranny! Take the hyphen out of Christian-Satanist! Join us in the long work ahead to build a better world where Christians can live in peace and repentance in societies founded on the principle “love thy neighbor as thyself”!
